Day 3

Wednesday - Right now I'm in the air conditioned club house of a golf course in the middle of the desert.  To avoid the heat we got up at 4:30 am (getting up before the sun is just wrong) and left camp at 5:30.  Unfortunately, the first SAG stop was late to setup and so we ran out of water as we entered the desert.  A support team with lots of water caught up to us eventually, thankfully.

We had to take the interstate for a while, since that's the only road through the desert, and it got really hot as the sun rose higher.  We reached the golf course just after 11:00 am and enjoyed a dip in their artificial lake to cool off.

  1. Hi Mike!! It's Emily Puklicz - I hadn't yet read all of your older blog posts until tonight. I should be in bed but you had me laughing and I couldn't stop reading. Praying for you all in this amazing journey! I will continue to check in - and leave comments, probably mostly directed at my appreciation for your humour!! hoping the heat starts to break soon for you all, and praying for some smoother rides for you!

  2. Mike, I love that even on a bike ride across the continent, you still managed to find a golf course. Enjoying a *refreshing beverage* in the clubhouse, eh?

And did they consent to your little impromptu swim, or should I be envisioning a scene out of Happy Gilmore... only with more people... and bikes? :)

    1. No one chased us out of the lake, so I assume it was okay :-). Unfortunately, no alcohol is permitted in camp, but I'm sure we'll find places along the way that serve "refreshing beverages".

    1. Thanks, Mike. My legs (and butt) are feeling fine so far. At this point it's only the heat that's a problem, but we've got some big climbs coming up...
